Job description

At Rosebel Gold Mines (RGM), we are seeking a dedicated and passionate Community Relations Officer to join our Community Relations department. In this role, you will play a vital part in supporting stakeholder engagement and community investment activities within RGM’s Communities of Interest (COIs), as well as the wider Brokopondo and Sipaliwini districts. The primary focus will be on strengthening relationships with the RGM COIs. You will be responsible for developing and implementing community engagement strategies, local economic development initiatives, and social investment programs, all in alignment with Rosebel’s Community Relations Management System.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and implementing community engagement strategies to enhance the company's reputation and promote positive community relations in the COIs and wider Brokopondo and Sipaliwini districts through field visits, stakeholder meetings, and review of secondary data and reports.

  • Developing and implementing projects, initiatives and activities relating to community development programs.

  • Organizing and participating in community events, meetings, and initiatives to foster strong relationships and promote community development in accordance with the Community Relations Management System.

  • Acting as a liaison between the company and the community, ensuring effective communication and understanding of company initiatives and projects.

  • Monitoring and evaluating community sentiment and feedback and providing recommendations for improvement.

Job requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A bachelor's degree in Community Relations, Public Relations, Social Sciences, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in social science research, community development, or sustainable development, of which a minimum of 2 years of field experience in a developing country. 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a genuine passion for community engagement and development.

  • Proven ability to build trust and rapport with diverse stakeholders and demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences.

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented skills, and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.

  • A valid Surinamese driver’s license.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills in Dutch and English and speaking knowledge of Sranan Tongo. Maroon language is an asset.

  • Willingness to work on a rotational schedule of 14 days of work followed by 7 days break at Rosebel Gold Mines sites in Brokopondo.
