Deputy Sustainability Director

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to assist the Sustainability Director in leading the strategic development and implementation of the organization’s sustainability strategy. This role is responsible for overseeing safety, health, environmental, community-relations, and risk-control initiatives, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and driving innovation and operational efficiency aligned with sustainable practices.

The role requires collaboration across departments and with external partners to promote long-term environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and business performance.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Stay current on sustainability trends, innovations, and best practices.

• Lead internal education and engagement programs to foster a culture of sustainability.

• Develop, implement, and continuously improve a comprehensive sustainability strategy.

• Align sustainability goals with corporate objectives and report progress to Zijin headquarters.

• Monitor and ensure compliance with environmental regulations and sustainability-related legislation.

• Lead ESG reporting and disclosure efforts, including:

  • GRI – Global Reporting Initiative standards for sustainability performance.

  • SASB – Sustainability Accounting Standards Board reporting framework.

  • CDP – Customer Data Platform reporting and stakeholder engagement.

  • TCFD – Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures for climate-related risk transparency.

• Identify opportunities to reduce the organization’s environmental impact, including carbon emissions, energy use, and waste.

• Manage sustainability-related risk assessments and materiality analyses.

• Engage with stakeholders including investors, community groups, customers, and regulatory bodies.

• Cultivate strategic partnerships with governments, NGOs, businesses, and local communities.

• Collaborate with procurement, operations, HR, and other teams to embed sustainability into business practices.

• Secure and manage funding, grants, or investments for development programs tied to sustainability outcomes.

Qualifications & Skills

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Sustainability, Environmental Management, Business, or a related field.

• Minimum of 10 years’ experience in sustainability strategy, ESG reporting, stakeholder engagement or environmental management, preferably within the mining or extractive industry.

• Knowledge of environmental regulations, sustainability standards, and reporting frameworks (GRI, SASB, CDP, TCFD).

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.

• Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners.

• Passion for sustainability, environmental stewardship, and corporate social responsibility.

• Willingness to work in Brokopondo and Paramaribo on a rotational schedule of 14 days of work followed by 7 days break

• A copy ID & a valid proof of good conduct “Bewijs goedgedrag”.

• Good communication and interpersonal skills in English.
