Job description
At Rosebel Gold Mines N.V., we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees. We are currently seeking a dedicated Health and Safety Superintendent to join our Occupational Health & Safety department. As a Health and Safety Superintendent, you will implement and manage company-wide safety policies and strategies designed to prevent injuries, ensuring emergency preparedness and enforce compliance.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Implement safety programs and strategies directed at managing significant risks and eliminating preventable injuries.
- Develop, communicate, and implement a strategy that contributes to a culture of Zero Harm to people, property, and process.
- Effectively manage safety team.
- Supervise and direct employees of the Health & Safety department (including ERT). Build the team through selection and recruitment and conduct performance evaluations.
- Plan, organize, lead, coordinate and control activities related to workplace health & safety.
- Promote workplace health & safety and ensure that the regulations are known and applied by employees.
- Advise and support senior management, managers and employees regarding all aspects of workplace health & safety. Oversee and assist supervisors in carrying out their responsibilities for health and safety at work.
- Coordinate the successful implementation of corporate safety programs and ongoing safety meetings.
- Develop performance measures and reporting systems in order to contribute to the continuous improvement of systems, programs and procedures for workplace health and safety. Check and analyze performance on an ongoing basis and prepare relevant reports.
- Manage all activities related to the health & safety management system (HSMS). Ensure implementation and compliance of HSMS. Support and advise management and managers in implementing and maintaining the H&S management system.
- Perform workplace visits and inspections to audit safety performance and systems and monitor compliance with safety policies and procedures. Inform key stakeholders of any hazardous infractions.
- Participate in incident investigations and facilitate ICAM investigations.
- Report to Managers, Site Superintendent(s), General Foremen, Frontline Supervisors, and Contractors on the health and safety status of operations. Make recommendations and implement solutions for improving safety records.
- Inform employees and management on safety strategies, policies and procedures and ensure they understand what is expected of them and the consequences of non-compliance.
- Participate in safety groups and committees and attend safety crew meetings on a selective basis as an observer or presenter.
- Maintain awareness of safety regulations, industry trends and new practices.
- Research the effectiveness of safety programs and prepare reports for senior management.
Manage the delivery of effective safety training programs.
- Manage safety programs.
- Ensure that programs are of high quality, that required employees attend the sessions and record keeping is compliant with company standards.
- Ensure trainers receive “Train the Trainer” courses and are familiar with the Act, Regulations and materials relevant to the material in which they are instructing.
- Ensure employees receive the training required for them to safely perform their duties and where appropriate, structure the training to provide them with specialty accreditation related to their role function.
- Conduct supervisory safety training programs and ensure training provided by Trainers is compliant and meets quality standards.
Ensure Emergency Preparedness at the mine site.
- Ensure that the organization has adequate emergency readiness
- Advise on Fire safety risks and ensure activities related to Fire safety are effectively carried out to manage risks.
- Organize and promote training sessions for managers and employees including First Aid and other Emergency Preparedness Training.
- Ensure there are an appropriate number of employees trained in Mine Rescue procedures.
Ensure effective Contractor Safety Management.
- Maintain good working relationships with contractors and actively communicate with contractors onsite.
- Make sure that contractors' audits/ inspections are regularly conducted.
- Facilitate monthly contractor safety meetings.
- Participate in contractor performance evaluations.
- Ensure contractor safety management process is followed by the respective stakeholders.
Job requirements
The ideal candidate will have:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety.
- Certificates in Occupational Health and Safety (i.e. Nebosh) is preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of related experience in Health and Safety.
- Minimum 5 years of previous supervision/ management experience.
- Must have a minimum of 10 years experience working in the mining industry.
- Experience with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.
- Risk Assessment and ICAM Investigation qualifications.
- Working knowledge of the following programs: LOTOV, Working at Height, Confined Space Safety, Machine Safeguarding, Hazardous Materials Management, Fatigue Management, Mobile Equipment Safety, Hoisting & Rigging, and Fire Safety is required.
- Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and certification in Occupational Health & Safety.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in English.
- Ability to conduct safety inspections and risk assessments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
